TASTE PROVES QUALITY
Family owned and operated over 80 years, Jennie’s Pizzeria is Fairfield County’s oldest pizzeria. Founded in 1935, three generations of DeSimone’s have run Jennie’s. In the black & white photo are Assunta & Alfonso DeSimone Sr., Katie & Alfonso DeSimone Jr. and their two children Alfonso DeSimone III & Richard DeSimone Sr. who operate the business today.
Originally in Bridgeport, it was after serving in WWII that Alfonso’s son Al Jr. joined them in running the pizzeria. It was in the late 1960s after Jennie’s had relocated to the upper end of Grand Street and added catering services and a delicatessen, that the third generation of DeSimone’s, Al III and Richard, (shown as children in the family photo) joined the family business.
In 1998, Jennie’s joined many of its Bridgeport customers in relocating to Monroe. Originally a take-out only establishment, Alfonse Jr., wife Kay and sons Al III and Richard, heard the pleas of their customers and expanded the facility to include a dining room. In 2016 they added fine wines to their menu.
Over the years, legions of local diners from Monroe and throughout Fairfield County to celebrities, like Tony Bennet, have enjoyed their delicious cuisine. Their secret sauce and meatballs from Assunta DeSimone’s old-world recipes is still used today. It’s featured at the St. Jude’s Italian Festival every year in the food tent and annually at Dinner with Santa in the Monroe Volunteer Firefighter’s Station 1. The pizzas are still hand crafted from the same old- country recipes passed down through three generations.
While Alfonso Jr. and Kay have passed on, their sons are committed to maintaining Jennie’s “Taste Proves Quality” reputation and service. Every dish is prepared from the heart.
