Ciara’s Trail Run

The first Annual Chasing Ciara’s Light 5k/12K Trail Run was held at Great Hollow Lake on Sept 9.  In spite of three other Monroe events happening the same day,  over 200 runners and friends  turned out to participate including members of the Monroe Police Department and  volunteer fire departments.

It was a day when anything seemed possible. A 13-year-old beat out the men’s field to place first among male runners and a 72-year old woman finished first among the female runners. A father and his 12-year-old son running together placed 6th and 7th  with less than a second between them.  Among the top 12K finishers was Monroe’s “running doc” Paul Moyse.

Ciara O’Driscoll loved life, and everyone who knew Ciara loved her. Her life ended in January at the age of 12. Snuffed out by Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic condition for which there is yet no cure. Ciara's Light Foundation was established in her memory by her mother, Lori, “to provide services and opportunities which improve the quality of life for individuals and families afflicted with special needs and life threatening medical conditions.”  Chasing Ciara’s Light is the first fundraiser for the foundation.
